Project Overview
The Gordie Howe International Bridge (GHIB) is one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in North America. Connecting Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario, this new cable-stayed bridge features two soaring towers rising 722 feet high. Once complete, it will carry six lanes of traffic plus a dedicated pedestrian and cyclist path.
To ensure long-term durability, the bridge deck was designed with a Latex Modified Concrete (LMC) overlay. The substrate was poured 1.5 inches below final grade to allow for the overlay, providing a 25-year service life for the riding surface and contributing to the bridge’s 100-year overall design life.
Background & Challenges:
Installing the LMC overlay between October 2 and November 19, 2024, our team faced the tough Detroit-Windsor weather — cold, wet, and windy conditions that tested every pour.
Fortunately, Trinseo’s 2022 Low Temperature Cure of LMC Report provided valuable guidance, helping us navigate the climate challenges successfully. Despite only 24 productive pour days, the team averaged 187 cubic yards per pour, placing the overlay with precision.
Our Solution:
Our strategy was simple: maximize productivity on pour days and prepare thoroughly on non-pour days. This meant long, back-to-back shifts — placing overlays as large as 48’ x 600’ x 2” in a single push.
The results speak for themselves:
Zero cracks were detected across the entire LMC overlay.
Each section was carefully chain dragged and inspected after curing to confirm strong bonding and no delamination.
