Project Overview

Modified Concrete Suppliers (MCS) partnered on a major I-77 bridge preservation project just south of Columbia, South Carolina. The scope included milling, hydrodemolition, and Latex Modified Concrete (LMC) overlays on nine bridges. Each structure received a brand-new LMC overlay, saw-cut grooving, and upgraded expansion joints. The project required a complete shutdown of eastbound and westbound I-77, with each direction closed for nine days.

Background & Challenges

The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) set an ambitious timeline for this project. With only a nine-day closure window in each direction, Swank Construction, Hydro-Technologies, and MCS had to coordinate seamlessly to complete a large volume of work in a very short period. Another challenge was the use of Type 1 Latex Modified Concrete, which requires a four-day cure time, adding to the scheduling complexity. While some joint repair was completed with Rapid Set LMC, the majority of work was completed with Type 1.

Our Solution

To meet the aggressive schedule, MCS deployed additional manpower and equipment, often working across multiple bridges at once. On some nights, our crews were placing LMC on three bridges simultaneously. Thanks to teamwork, planning, and execution, the first phase finished one day ahead of schedule, and the second phase wrapped up two days early—a major win for both the project team and the traveling public.

Results

The I-77 bridge preservation project was completed ahead of schedule, ensuring safer, smoother travel for commuters in Columbia. Each of the nine bridges now benefits from a durable Latex Modified Concrete overlay, improved rideability, and long-term protection against South Carolina’s demanding climate.
