Project Overview

The US 281 Bridge over the South Canadian River—known locally as the Bridge Port Pony Bridge or William H. Murray Bridge—is a historic structure stretching over 3,000 feet with more than 11,000 square yards of bridge deck. To extend the service life of this landmark, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (OKDOT) designed the project to include a Latex Modified Concrete (LMC) overlay, ensuring improved rideability, durability, and long-term protection.

Background & Challenges

As part of the preservation effort, this historic bridge deck was intentionally poured 1.5 inches below grade to allow for the installation of an LMC overlay. The challenge was to create a durable, waterproof surface that would protect the bridge deck from environmental wear while maintaining a smooth driving surface. OKDOT specifically selected an LMC overlay because of its proven performance in extending bridge service life across the United States.

Our Solution

Modified Concrete Suppliers (MCS) utilized a precision milling process to remove 1/8” to ¼” from the new concrete deck surface. After milling, the deck was pressure-washed at a minimum of 7,500 PSI to achieve a thoroughly clean substrate. The deck was then kept saturated and protected with plastic sheeting until the Latex Modified Concrete overlay was placed. This meticulous process ensures proper bonding, waterproofing, and long-term durability.

Results

With the LMC overlay in place, OKDOT now has a historic bridge deck designed to last 25+ years. LMC is the only overlay material with decades of proven field performance—many installations continue to perform successfully even after 30 years of service. This project showcases how Latex Modified Concrete overlays deliver unmatched protection and value for bridge preservation.
